Today, I want to share two SEO myths and misconceptions you need to know about and work on.
WHAT IS SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)?
SEO is refers to optimising your website to make it accessible and understandable by search engines (e.g. Google) so as to show up favourably/rank high in Search Engine Results Page (SERP) for relevant words or phrases used by searchers.
SEO MYTH ONE
My website is ranking on Google first page!
That sounds great! The question is what relevant words or phrases is your website ranking for? Is the keyword relevant to your business or is it a word none of your potential customers will be looking for?
While it is good to rank on Google’s Search Engine Results Page (SERP), especially on page one, your target should be to rank for relevant keywords used by your ideal customers. Ranking on first page will not convert to sales for you if nobody is searching for the
keywords that place you on Google’s first page.
LESSON TO LEARN
Do not aim to just rank on first page of search engine results. Aim to rank for relevant words or phrases that will bring about the conversions you desire.
SEO MYTH TWO
Use keywords that drive traffic to your website as long as it is related to your business.
Hmmm… Correct but not so true. The objective of a business is to grow and make profit. You achieve this by identifying a need, providing a solution as well as identifying the target customers who will find your solution beneficial and be willing to pay for it.
To illustrate my point, let us assume you sell pricy Louis Vuitton (designer) bags and your target customers are high income earners. If you use keywords like “budget fashion items” in your sales copy simply because it attracts high website traffic, you might get the wrong
audience to your site, only for them to bounce back when they discover that your “budget fashion items” are way above their budget.
LESSON TO LEARN
Be strategic in your choice of keywords. Seek to know the intents of searchers when they use the keywords you want to rank for. Aim to provide relevant contents and value to the searchers that visit your site.
